MSF, Doctors without Borders

I have so many things to consider. I got it in my head a few days ago that I'd really like to do some work with Medicins sans Frontiers. Of course I had considered this option a few times before but it had always been just that - another option, another alternative to this medical story. But lately I've been considering it more seriously. The thing about MSF is that because you are volunteering as a doctor you must have some degree of expertise and I don't mean just a medical degree. if I were to go this route through MSF USA I would need to complete 3 years of residency training whereas if I go through MSF Australia I only need to complete 2 (internship and one year residency). Also, if I stay in Australia I'll get to do basic medical training in both medical and surgical fields, whereas in America I will have to choose either medicine or surgery. It's really hard to choose between the two systems. I hope to receive clarity soon - the fact that I am getting older i

Food for the Homeless - NYC

I helped out at a soup kitchen associated with a Lutheran Church in the Lower East Side today. It was my second time there. Homelessness and unemployment appears to be a big problem in Manhattan. In no other city (I have lived in) have I seen so many people on the streets and scouraging through trash cans for food and drink. I think the soup kitchen and homeless outreach programs in the city have a lot of potential. They are doing very good work but can definitely be improved in many ways. Many of the volunteers at these kitchens appear to be from low socioeconomic backgrounds themselves. They say you can "get by" in New York without a job. People get their meals at soup kitchens and pay for rent through intermittent work and sometimes by "unsavoury" means. The volunteers generally seemed nice enough but did not have the capacity to carry out tasks very efficiently. For instance, one of the group leaders today was tasked with telling the servers how many people t

Updates.

Tomorrow I will be having lunch with someone important. It is making me nervous, especially since my phone smells so strongly of JMC right now and memories of the Office causes some anxiety. This probably will make no sense at all to you... but by way of (some) explanation, I was at Sephora today and decided to show a friend the intoxicating (in a somewhat good way) cologne used by a former collegue... Unfortunately I decided also to leave the fragrance stick in my bag which I've just realised has completely overwhelmed the bag and its contents. O_o lets hope it airs by tomorrow. I don't want to go to lunch smelling like a very sexy man.

LINSANITY on Saturday Night Live

The past couple of weeks in New York has been all about Jeremy Lin, the latest sensation in American basketball. I'm not going to say much about this because he's been written about multiple times a day over the past two weeks and you can quite easily find the articles on Google. What I Am going to say is that I have never come across a guy like him. He's not just an NBA sensation, he's also Christian, typical Asian American, competitive, smart (Harvard grad) and wants to do social work when his basketball career eventually comes to an end. And he's pretty darn good at offering assists, which is a good lesson for me because I think I can often time not be a great team player. At the end of the day, his story is just inspiring and has been one of the highlights of my American adventure. In other news, I have only two weeks left in New York! I can't believe this is coming to an end. It has been the best 3 months of my life. One more week after that in LA/San Fr
